Flames and smoke could be seen billowing from the second story of a home on Johnson Street, near the intersection of West Kingsbridge Road in Mount Vernon, fire officials confirmed. It was first reported at approximately 2 p.m. on Feb. 25.

Crews struggled to contain the flames, which were shooting out of the second story window, compounded by smoke, which was sent blowing every which way by Monday’s whipping winds. Firefighters also had to contend with a partial roof collapse, and worked to prevent the wind from spreading the fire to a neighboring home.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear and no injuries were initially reported. This story is developing, check Daily Voice for updates.
